Perthshire Rugby’s Forward Momentum Continues with Director of Rugby Appointment

Perthshire Rugby’s forward momentum continues with the appointment of a new Director of Rugby. The club, which is renowned for the quality of the coaching product delivered across all age groups, has appointed Sam Mountain to the coveted post to oversee the implementation of strategic themes across all areas of club activity.

Eamon O’Brien, Midi Section Head, comments, “We’re delighted to welcome Sam to Perthshire Rugby. This is a great appointment at an important time for the club as we seek to further develop our rugby product & experience for all age groups”.

“Sam’s Director of Rugby brief includes driving the development of Participation and Performance rugby working closely with club coaches, developing and implementing a coordinated coaching education programme across all sections of the club and co-ordinating the implementation of the club’s playing philosophy throughout all teams”, explains Eamon. “Sam will also work closely with Scottish Rugby and the Caledonia Midlands team to ensure our strategic objectives are aligned”.

“In addition, Sam will be heading up Perthshire Rugby’s community engagement programme in schools, overseeing the strength and conditioning programme and implementing succession & development planning for players and volunteer coaches. It’s a strong remit and myself and the Committee are delighted he’s joined our team”.

Commenting on his appointment, Sam said, “I’m very excited to join Perthshire Rugby. The Club’s vision is very compelling. From the early stages of our conversations, I knew this role would be for me. I’m looking forward to playing my part to make the vision a reality across the club.  I’m keen to get to work and engage with all Perthshire Rugby members, stakeholders and the wider community”.

Key responsibilities for the Director of Rugby position include:

  • To drive the development of Participation & Performance rugby at Perthshire Rugby by working closely with Club coaches/volunteer and schools.
  • Working collaboratively to manage the delivery of rugby development programmes in schools by Community Coaches to drive player participation at the club at all Levels (Men, Women, Boys and Girls).
  • Supporting the development of a sustainable club to provide members, coaches, volunteers, and new participants with a consistently great experience.
  • Working closely with the Caledonia Midlands regional team and in partnership with the local stakeholders to ensure Scottish Rugby’s strategic objectives are aligned.
  • Oversee the Clubs S&C Programme.
  • Develop and implement a coordinated coaching Education programme throughout all sections of the Club.
  • Co-ordinating the implementation of the Club’s “agreed playing philosophy” throughout all teams.
  • Oversee the implementation of a Long-Term Player Development programme throughout the Club with a particular focus of transitioning youth players to senior rugby.
  • Provide succession planning to ensure that qualified coaches are appointed to all teams and receive the appropriate training required by attending designated coaching courses.
  • Report to the Committee on rugby matters and make recommendations on improvements/ initiatives that need to be implemented.
  • Set behavioural standard policies for all teams and members.
