Tayside Girls 50 – 0 Highland
The Tayside Girls brought their short but very competitive season to a close with a resounding win at the Caledonia Finals day in Aberdeen.
The score line does not do justice to the grit, determination and individual skill of the Highland girls. Tayside were just that bit more organised on the day. With some good carries from the pack backed by intuitive decision making off 9 &10, Tayside were able to utilise the speed out on the wings to their advantage.
The push on women’s rugby is very welcome, if long overdue. The rewards for rugby are there to be seen. Watching the development of the U16 girls game, across the teams since Christmas, has been an absolute privilege. Respect, leadership, achievement, engagement and enjoyment in buckets.

27/03/2022 Tayside lift the National Shield
Tayside Girls 41 – 12 Caithness RFC
Tayside Girls secured the National Shield with a hard contested win over Caithness at the Dam Health Stadium. What a journey these Tayside Girls have had since first coming together; it is only their 7th game together!
If there was ever an advert for how exciting girls’ rugby can be and what potential there is, across Scotland, yet to be unleashed…. then Sunday’s Club Youth Finals provided it in buckets. Let’s hope that those that have influence were watching, listening and will act.

13/03/ 2022 Stirling County Just Too Strong For The Tayside Girls
Tayside Girls 10-46 Stirling County
The Tayside Girls came up against some tough competition in the semi-finals for the National Cup. Ultimately Stirling proved to be just that bit quicker in the ruck and more organised.

ere certainly not shy in tackling and defended with verve. They put together some inspired moves, but handling errors made life that bit tougher for the Tayside Girls. Overall, 
that the Stirling Girls held their form was in the end where their edge was over Tayside.
In watching the Tayside Girls’ confidence and passion you do have to keep remembering that this was only their sixth match together. That they are now in the final for the Shield, to be played at the DAM Health Stadium, is absolute testament to how far these girls have come.
27/02/2022 Clean sweep for the Tayside Girls
Tayside Girls 60 – 10 Fife Girls
The Tayside Girls continued their campaign with a strong team effort on Sunday against Fife Girls. It was a noticeably more physical game and Fife opened the scoring with an excellent run that defensively took the Tayside Girls on.
Tayside rallied and it is testament as to how far this team (originating from a quartet of clubs) have developed in such a short time, that they re-grouped, got their cohesion sorted and started to put the Fife Girls under pressure. This pressure was exerted by the whole team and resulted in a flurry of tries.
You can understand the difficultly for the coaches of an amalgamated team with an eye to the semis to settle on different player’s positional strengths. There was a bit of position swapping halfway through but, in many aspects, this didn’t help the coaches as there was no drop off in performance from the Tayside Girls. Nothing like making a coach’s life more difficult!!
Undoubtedly this was a good performance from the Tayside Girls. The Fife Girls did however persistently put the Tayside Girls under pressure which resulted in a bit of panic and loss of structure in the defensive line at times.
The coaches will be working on this and the breakdown at the joint training sessions. If the girls translate the training drills onto the game field, they will continue to be a force to be reckoned with.
13/02/2022 Tayside Girls over power Garioch
Garioch 0-50 Tayside Girls

ls put in another strong, almost over-powering performance up in Inverurie. The game reverted to a development game towards the end of the first half. Despite the score the Garioch girls put in some spirited tackling and were very close to going over the Tayside line on several occasions.
The Tayside Girls over the last four games are setting the pace, showing great physicality and focus. When, towards the later part of the game, they started playing out wide and setting the play you saw the potential that this team has.
It is pleasantly surprising to reflect that this was only Tayside Girl’s fourth game playing together. They are coming together, bonding and more importantly understand each other’s strengths and weakness. They are certainly not short of communication between themselves on field!! As with all teams, even when winning, there are areas that the team will be working on. They will look to continue to bring their training drills onto the field when in a match. There is still the tendency to continually take the ball into contact instead of drawing in and offloading. Defence is also an area that the Tayside Girls will need to focus on if they progress through the Cup.
There is certainly the passion in this team to take them forward.
06/02/2022 Strong win in strong winds for Tayside Girls
Tayside Girls 50 – 0 Whitecraigs
Sunday saw another good performance and win from the Tayside U16 girls, played in a biting cold wind at the Montrose rugby ground. The decision to bring together the girls from the four clubs for the Cup games does seem to be paying dividends. To that end it was great to see a Tayside squad of 19 girls turning up with a real keenness to play.
As it transpired the game had to be restricted to 10 aside on a smaller 80×60 pitch. While this may have at times disrupted the application of some of the drills developing at the joint Friday night session, the girls applied themselves and certainly took it to Whitecraigs team.
By 20 minutes in coach Dec effectively switched nearly the whole team to ensure the girls were getting game time….. and staying warm!!! By half time the competitive game was over with a 50-0 score for Tayside. The girls however mixed it up with Whitecraigs and a good development 15 aside game was played on the full pitch. All credit to all the Whitecraig and Tayside girls for the way they came together and the mix provided for some entertaining rugby.
The coach Dec was very pleased with the performance of the girls. He commented that the open play was really good but that work is needed in passing before the contact. There was a tendency to get drawn in, taking the hit and then trying to offload. While Whitecraigs were at times weak in linking play they were strong in the tackle. As such Tayside often made it more difficult for themselves.
The girls will therefore expect to be working on the two on one drills, the ruck and the scrum when they come together for training on Friday. With the form that they are developing it will be good to see these drills being executed in their next game against Garioch this coming Sunday.
23/01/2022 Tayside U16 girls build on success.
Cartha Queens Park 10 – 60 Tayside
The Tayside girls showed they could build on their success as they went up against Cartha on Sunday for their first away game. The coaches Derek and Graham were pleased to see that the ruck area had come on from last week. The girls had listened to the feedback and instead of standing back they were invariably getting in and rucking. This gave the girls more options and attacking opportunities.
You could see the girls are understanding each other better and gelling further with better communication. Derek and Graeme highlighted some good examples of the forwards looking for the backs and using the width to engage the wingers and fullback. This can only but improve with combined training being planned.
While the defence stood up well, with good individual tackling, the girls did leave 4 or 5 tries on the field. This was frustrating as the build-up and attacking lines were generally good only for there to be a lack of concentration leading to errors in passing and catching.
A well-deserved win from a side that is building in confidence.
16/01/2022 Success for Tayside Girls first Cup game
Tayside 65 – 15 Caithness
Sunday was the setting for the first National cup game for the under 16 girls and also the first play as the amalgamated Tayside. Tayside has brought together Perthshire, Dundee, Montrose and Strathmore girls. Bringing the teams together at this stage will ensure a core of players that can grow in confidence through game time.
In speaking to the Tayside coaches after the game they both highlighted how well Tayside started. That despite having played intermittently together at conferences it was no surprise that to begin with you could see it was a squad of four individual teams. What surprised the coaches was how quickly the girls started to blend and play well together.
The tackling was immense with some good passing lines and support play. The coaches did see areas that the girls need to work on. In the middle they became a little bit complacent perhaps thinking they would win the ruck every time. They thus stood out and waited for the next phase. Caithness were quick to take advantage and put in some excellent attacking lines.
Overall the coaches were more than pleased with the first outing. It is still early days and it is important that different girls are tried out in different positions as they continue to gel and develop. Sunday’s performance showed there is a real good core and potential with this amalgamated Tayside team.
