Hawick U16 (63) vs Perthshire U16s (19) – 22nd December ’19
After the original date for this match was postponed due to a frozen pitch the week before, the Perthshire boys were really looking forward to the contest against Border opposition. However the day didn’t go as planned, as they came up against a strong well drilled Hawick team, who did the basics really well.
Right from the get go an unclaimed kick off saw Hawick receive a penalty, and the Borderers scored from the resulting line-out, giving the home side a 5-0 lead. 8 minutes in Hawick were awarded a penalty in front of the posts to increase their lead to 8-0. Shire hadn’t offered much opposition up to this point, but gradually seemed to be getting up a head of steam with good pressure in the Hawick red zone. After some great forward work, Bartek burst through to score, Ben C converted making the score 8-7. It looked like at this point the Perth boys were back in the game, and were well up for it. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be, at the 15min mark Hawick intercepted a pass on the Shire 5m line to jog in under the posts, the kick converted easily. (15-7). The boys manage to contain the Greens for the next 10 minutes, but to no avail, a combination of good Hawick play, and some poor decision making by Perthshire saw Hawick add a penalty and two converted tries to their tally making the half time score 32-7.
The second half started with a lot of huffing and puffing by both teams but again the Hawick pressure and poor Perthshire decisions allowed the home side to run in four more tries with nothing in return making the score 58-7. Although the game was all but over, the Perth boys never gave up, and after an Eric D run from his own half, the ball found its way to Iain C who scored near the posts, converted by Ben C. 58-14. For a short spell, the Shire boys had the better of Hawick and a great break down the left wing by Kieran B from the halfway line saw him score in the corner. 58-19. In the end, Hawick had the last word, and put the finishing touches on what had been a great day for them by adding another try to their total, making the final score 63-19.
Overall Hawick deserved to win the match, but the score didn’t reflect the fantastic effort the Perthshire boys put in. Everyone gave their all, but it was mainly poor decisions that cost Perthshire dearly.
So onwards and upwards as we look forward to the Caley Cup.

01/12/19: Perthshire U16s (64) vs Highland U16s (17)
A big win today as Perthshire run in 10 tries against a tough Highland team.
After the long trip on the bus, and the temp dropping to as low as -9 on the way, the boys arrived in Inverness to be greeted with a balmy +2 degrees.
The match kicked off later than originally planned as the U15’s had to play first, as the grass pitches were frozen.
Not much happened in the first five minutes or so and play was contained in the middle of the pitch as both teams tried to suss each other out. However, in the 9th minute Finlay K burst through to score, and his try was converted by Ben C. (0:7)
Perthshire didn’t get it all their own way and play continued to be pretty even, again in the middle third, until a try came from run by Iain in the 17th minute. Again converted by Ben C.(0:14) Callum then got in on the action, after he caught the resulting kick off, and waltzed through several would be tacklers to score under the posts, Ben again adding the extras.(0:21)
Highland then managed to make their way up the field, and after several attempts, pushed over for a try, the conversion was missed.(5:21) Towards the end of the half, Shire had a lineout inside the Highland 22. A well-executed catch and drive, followed by some slick hands along the line, allowed Ben C to score in the opposite corner. Unfortunately Mikey missed the kick.
Half time score Highland 5:26 Perthshire.
5 minutes into the second half and Perth scored again with more slick passing from half way with Mikey touching down, Ben once again converting. (5:33)
Highland then put a bit of pressure on and forced Perth back into our own 5 metre area, a sclaffed clearance went back into our dead ball area and was bravely collected by Ben C, who was clearly taken out by a Highland player whilst still in the air. It can only be assumed that the ref didn’t see the tackle, as Highland were awarded a 5 metre scrum and went on to score under the posts. This time the conversion was successful. (12:33). 15 mins into the second half Jonathan crossed the line after some strong running, the kick missed by Callum.(12:38).
In the 54th min some poor tackling by Perth allowed the Highland winger to run from the left side of the pitch all the way to the right, then down the touch line to score, the conversion missed. (17:38).
This was the last points for Highland, and then constant pressure by Perthshire opened the floodgates.
56th minute Iain , with some jinky running scored again, converted by Ben. (17:45). Then Konnor smashed through the defence at the 59th minute mark, after some excellent combination play with both the forwards and the backs to touch down, and an on form Ben converted again. (17:52). The try fest continued after a well-timed pass just inside the Perth half put Jonathan through a gap, he was stopped on the Highland 22, but he managed to feed the ball through to Iain who went on to score his hat trick with Ben doing the honours again. (17:59). The final score of the game came in the last minute, when the ball was kicked through from the Perth half, and although Highland collected, the intense Perth pressure resulted in Eric scoring. Ben, unfortunately missed the final conversion after having a great day with the boot.
Final score Highland 17:64 Perth.
Overall a fine performance, good play both in defence and attack, the only opportunities for the opposition coming on the few occasions when Perth lost concentration.
Even if not named here, all the boys put in a great shift with hard tackling and superb handling all round.
One more conference game to go, keep it up lads.

24/11/19 : Perthshire U16s (24) vs Boroughmuir U16s (17) - 24th November ’19
Due to the pitches at the Inch being unplayable, today’s U16 fixture against Boroughmuir was moved to the artificial surface at the RPC in Dundee.
This promised to be a really tasty fixture if the away game in Edinburgh was anything to go by, and it didn’t disappoint.
Perthshire started well, and scored early on with a fantastic line break by Iain, try converted by Ben C (7:0). The boys continued to keep the pressure on Boroughmuir throughout the first half with regular sorties into the opposition red zone. But unfortunately they were unable to capitalise on their efforts, squandering several scoring opportunities. Perthshire defended really well in the first half, not allowing Boroughmuir very much territory in their half of the field. Ben C kicked a penalty towards the end of the first half, and after holding out to a rare Boroughmuir attack, the half ended 10:0 to Perthshire.
As expected Boroughmuir came out in the second half all guns blazing and scored under posts within a couple of minutes of the restart, followed by a simple conversation. (10:7) Shire were defending well, but were still a under a lot of pressure and they conceded again, and although the conversion was missed, this put Boroughmuir in front 10:12. Perthshire then got their act together and after some slick play, Iain broke through again, to score to the left of the posts. Callum converted successfully giving Perthshire the lead 17:12. The boys were not done there, and Callum chased down his own kick ahead and dived on the ball under the posts to score, followed by another conversion by Ben C. Perthshire ahead 24:12.
From then on the opposition really turned the screw and the boys had a lot of defending to do. Eventually Boroughmuir scored again after a sustained attack on the Perthshire 5m line, however the conversion was missed making the score 24:17.
This turned out to be the last score of the game, however Perthshire still had to defend well to keep Boroughmuir at bay, and they hung on for a well-deserved hard fought victory, against a very well drilled team.
Overall a fantastic effort by all the boys, they should be really proud of themselves. MON THE SHIRE!
25/08/19 : Perthshire U16s (10) vs Stirling County U16s (52) - 25th August 2019
The Perthshire U16s played their first game of the Shogun Conference on Sunday against their counterparts from Stirling.
The Perth boys managed to dominate territory and possession for long periods of the game but unfortunately we were unable to turn pressure in to points and Stirling broke away to score a number of well worked tries, which were nearly all converted by their excellent place kicker. Stirling gave us a good lesson in how to maintain and use possession effectively.
There were many positives to be taken, including a strong performance from the pack in the scrums and rucks, against a much larger Stirling 8. There was also an excellent debut by Lewis T on the wing who made several powerful runs and generally looked like he had been playing on the North Inch for years. Other notable performers were Eric D and Finlay W who continues to improve with every game he plays.
Clearly the Stirling boys were better prepared than us and benefited from playing Hawick the week before, but this game showed where we are as a squad and what we need to aim for over the coming season. It is important that we train and respond well this week.
19/08/19 : PERTHSHIRE U16S (24) VS ELLON U16S (7) – 18TH AUGUST’19
The under 16’s played their one and only pre-season game before the conference commences next week.
The boys came up against a good rucking, hard running and solid tackling Ellon team. Ellon started the game well and it took the boys a while to get into the swing of it.
In this early period Ellon took a deserved lead with a converted try. Perthshire soon got into the swing of things and came back into the game. Ellon probably had the upper hand in the rucks but the Perthshire forwards stuck to the task . In the loose, the forwards were working well, keeping continuity in contact with good support running and offloads. This was something they had been working on in training so was a joy to behold. The backs got their fair share of ball to run with and were a bit rusty at times but worked well at times contributing four unanswered tries with two apiece from Finlay K and Iain C. Shout out to Eric D playing his first game for Perthshire and left winger Jonathan V who had an outstanding game in the back row. Final score 24 – 7. Weather atrocious!
