Undefeated in the Pool then Stopped in the Semi-finals
Perthshire entered 2 teams into their home tournament on the North Inch. Some late injury call offs forced Co-Captains Simon McGarry & AJ Guthrie into a reshuffle of the intended line-ups. In Pool 1, Perthshire got off to a flying start overcoming Deeside then Crieff in back-to-back matches before they were allowed a break. ‘Shire continued their winning streak in a close match against “Lesley Supreme,” a team of last year’s Perthshire Colts, and finished off undefeated & topping Pool 1 with a convincing win over Hillfoots.
In Pool 2 the Perthshire Red team fared less well always in the match but the lack of substitutes hampering the efforts to see matches out. A narrow loss to “North Inch Nomads,” another team of returning Colts from a few seasons ago, was followed by further defeats in the remaining fixtures. Perthshire never gave up and Calum MacDonald in particular was all over the pitch defending hard and attacking space where he could find it.
The main Perthshire team entered the Cup semi-final with strong support from the side-lines however, they were unable to overcome their opponent and eventual tournament winner the University of Strathclyde.
That ends the brief 7s season for Perthshire. In such a short time and with limited player availability Team Manager Matt Stevens and the Co-Captains should be proud of their efforts to put out competitive squads in the tournaments entered.

Runners up in the Creiff 7s Plate
Perthshire 7s started their season with a journey across to our friends at Crieff & Strathearn Rugby. Pool wins against Stirling County, Morrisonians and Crieff B but a loss to eventual winners Abertay University put ‘Shire into the Plate final. It was a close run match with the final score 19-12 in the favour of Hillfoots. Co-captains Simon McGarry and AJ Guthrie were happy with the squad’s efforts and are excited to see how they progress at the Perth 7s this coming weekend.

2019: Success and Frustration in 2019 Sevens’ Season
Super Saturday of 7s in Perth
Perthshire field 3 teams at home tournament and put on a strong show
The whole 7s season was geared towards this tournament. After a few late withdrawals Perthshire took to the pool stages with 3 teams: Perthshire, President’s VII and Mavericks. Many of the players had featured in the 150th Anniversary match against the Army the previous night and those that didn’t had enjoyed the Friday night hospitality.
The Mavericks worked hard despite not being suited to the shortened format but there were outstanding plays including a 50m break from Andy “Combine” Jack. The President’s VII, ably captained by Dan Rae, ran Boroughmuir & Dunfermline close before overcoming Morpeth to reach the Plate quarterfinals. However, the toll of Friday night showed and they were knocked out by a Dalkeith surge in the second half.
The main Perthshire team were strong throughout with victories in the pool against Liberton, Howe of Fife and Crieff to make the Cup competition. Perthshire exacted revenge on Dunfermline to win the quarterfinal 19-17 thanks to a converted try in the last play. However, the semi-final was not to be, as they lost 7-24 to the eventual tournament winners The Might Bovs.
This concludes the 2019 season for 7s. A great effort from all the players involved who can take a rest now before preseason training starts in July.
False Start at Howe of Fife 7s
Bye in first round leaves ‘Shire cold and too slow to start
Perthshire travelled to Cupar with a stronger squad as competition for places grows. Alas on a chilly day the first match against St Andrews University was a bye as the students didn’t turn up. This left the Perthshire team waiting around for hours until the Cup pool ties were played. The start was too slow and Dundee made light work in that fixture and although warmed up an improved Perthshire weren’t able to overcome Heriots.
Next week will be the Perthshire 7s at the Beer Festival. With 24 teams in the draw it is set to be a full on day of 7s action.

Discipline hurts ‘Shire as they come off second best in Shield Final
For the second week in a row Perthshire kicked off against Dunfermline in the 7s tournament. And for the second week it was a narrow loss. Next up, in dramatic fashion after reduced to 6 men following a Red card, Perthshire kept their composure to see off the challenge from Howe of Fife.
The Shield Final beckoned against local favourites Morrisons FP who had the crowd behind them in this local derby fixture. Perthshire struggled for form and they never really threatened to make a contest of the match. Special mention to Richard Haggart who, turning out for Morrisons, managed to score against his Perthshire teammates with a non-athletic falling over the line from a few metres out.
Short of silverware this week, however, Co-Captain Callum Croughan managed to get his hands on the Calcutta Cup the next day along with Club Captain Ewan MacKessack-Leitch and the Club Mascot during Caledonia Midi Finals Day.

7s team win Plate competition at Kirkcaldy 7s
After narrowly losing the first round match to overall winners Dunfermline, Perthshire were entered in to the Plate competition. The Kirkcaldy President’s VI were dispatched in the semi-final before and empathic 31-0 victory over Glenrothes saw Perthshire lift the Plate.
A great start to the 7s season and the boys really enjoyed their day out in the hot Easter sun. There are 2 more tournaments to go until the Perthshire 7s, next up Crieff where the challenge is to serve up more success.
