Date : 11/02/24 Title Perthshire 35 Dundee 24
An intense, physical and at times niggly game today.
The referee did on several occasions stop play and reminded both team captains the need for discipline and fair play.
Thankful we opened the scoring after 15 minutes to be 7 – 0 ahead.
A penalty gave Dundee 3 points.
A little later the Dundee scrum half scores and with the conversion Dundee get ahead by 7 to 10 points.
Shortly thereafter we replied with a converted try making it 14 to 10 at half time.
The second half saw both teams scoring but thankfully we managed to keep ahead despite Dundee’s best efforts. Thus the game ended with a win for us by 35 points to 24.
Milos also made an impressive debut for the team today. Nobody needed anything from the first aid bag today thankfully.
However we did pick up two yellow cards – Gonnae no dae that in future games !
Head coach Les’s reflections on today’s game :
“A good day at the inch today. What was most pleasing was the way the boys played with a togetherness and a spirit, fighting for the jersey in a common cause. That lifted their performance and it also coincided with everybody playing really well.
We rucked and scrummaged well. Everybody worked hard. We moved the ball wide, scored some cracking tries. Nobody took a backwards step. When we bring the togetherness and team spirit into playing well we are a very decent side.
Well played today the Colts TEAM !
Date : 03/02/24 Title Glenalmond 7s
The team was very disappointed when the scheduled away Caledonia Cup game against Deeside was cancelled due to low numbers.
Thankfully on Friday morning we got word about playing in the Glenalmond 7s at PRFC.
As it turned out we ended up fielding two teams with each containing several Aberfeldy players. In each team the players integrated very well and despite no sevens practice sessions both teams put in superb performances.

Head Coach Les’s reflections on the competition :
“Our Perthshire players joined up with those from Aberfeldy to create two 7s teams for today’s competition. Both teams did well with good running , passing and tackling. Was good to get a runout after the disappointment of having to cancel our cup game. Training next week to get ready for Dundee and hopefully we might see some players from Aberfeldy join us for the rest of the season.”

Date : 27/01/24 Title Perthshire 7 - Robert Gordons College 61
Although we had a full team of 15 for this game unfortunately we had no subs and it was uncontested scrums as well.
The very strong gusty wind had to be taken into consideration when the ball was kicked. Particularly in the first half when we were playing into it.
Robert Gordon’s were first to quickly score. Thereafter they repeatedly turned pressure into points by getting the ball quickly through the hands to wingers who took the ball forward at pace. 
That’s what we wanted to do.

At times the score line matched the number of minutes played. We did apply some sustained pressure but it repeatedly fell short of the line.
Thankfully we managed to limit the score line at half time to 0 to 29
Some straight talking and sole searching at half time was required for what we all hoped was going to be a better performance in the second half.
Some great passing got the ball to Olie Atkin who broke two tackles before going over the try line. Leo completed the conversion.
Suitably motivated Robert Gordon’s upped their game and began to further increase their lead. At full time Robert Gordon’s had won by 65 points to 7
Next Saturday we hit the road to play Deeside / Gairoch at Banchory.
Date : 20/01/24 Title Howe of Fife 51 - Perthshire 24
This game was the first of 2024 and was supposed to be played at Howe’s home ground but it was still frozen despite the rain and warmer temperature. Thankfully we managed to get a team of 20 players together for this game.
Howe opened the scoring at 5 to 0 After 15 minutes of play we were ahead by 7 points to 5 However by half time Howe were ahead by 24 to 7 More scoring by both teams changed the score line as follows. 29 – 7, 34 – 7, 34 – 12, 39 – 12, 44 – 12, 44 – 17
51 – 24 at Full Time
Speaking with the referee after the game he commented that despite being on the wrong side of the score line he was very impressed with the team’s positivity throughout the game.
Head Coach Les’s reflections on the game :
“A relatively good performance against Howe of Fife this week.
It was quite clear from the offset that we had not trained together coming up against a team who had.
We did however score some good tries.
If we work hard together and train / play more together as the next fixtures progress then our performance will improve.
We won the last 30 minutes because we gradually got our team game together..
So all in all a few mistakes today but that happens when you don’t play rugby for 6 to 7 weeks.
A few simple errors allowed Howe to score 4 or 5 of their tries but that is to be expected with limited training recently.
Date : 16/12/23 Title Dunfermline 24 - Perthshire 41
With low numbers registered for the game it was converted into a friendly with uncontested scrums.
We ended up with 16 players and a local substitute referee as the official one travelled accidentally to another town !
There was little between the two teams in the first half and as such it ended at 10 all.
In the second half we managed to raise our game as requested during the halftime break. Dunfermline did similar but we were able execute more of the opportunities and thus the game ended with a win for us by 41 points to 24
Head Coach Les’s reflections on the game :
“Nice to get a good Christmas present. Finally see the boys get a win this season because I missed the last one ! Every one played very well with good team spirit.
Very pleased with the defence. They put in a lot of tackles and thus stopped Dunfermline’s Plan A. We moved the ball around well and therefore scored some good tries. The good team spirit kept going to the end of the game.
We also found a new second rower for the rest of the season !”

Date : 18/11/23 Title Perthshire 33 - Ellon 15
The pre match run throughs went well today thereby hinting a competitive game was going to enjoyed by all.
We opened the scoring with a converted try early on. Ellon replied with a try making it 7 to 5 for Perthshire. Pressure by Perthshire raised the score to 14 to 5 and eventually 19 to 5 at halftime.
We scored first after the break making it 26 to 5. However Ellon managed to get another two unconverted tries taking the score line up to 26 to 15 Fortunately Perthshire still had some gas in the tank and replied with a final converted try thereby making the final score 33 to 25 for Perthshire.
Coach Jim McGhee thoughts on today’s game :
“The game today was well played with a scratch team put together. The boys didn’t really know each other but they came together well. The basics were done really well.
The ruck was fiercely contested. Ellon played the ball close to the ruck most of the time. They got a lot of return from running close to the ruck and making hard yards.
We used the ball well. The ball moved out to the wings quite a lot. Defence was good.
In attack the ball went through the hands much better today. Basic skills were better today despite the weather conditions and the boys got the just rewards. Very good team tries. A very good team effort from a scratch squad.”

Man of the match was Oliver Atkin closely followed by Stan Brodie and Nathan Clark.
Date :11/11/23 Title Perthshire Colts 10 - Melrose Colts 43
Perthshire Colts 10 – Melrose Colts 43 , 11/11/23
We had a team of 16 players today to take on the Melrose Wasps. The play ebbed and flowed early on in between numerous warnings regarding tackle height for both teams.
Eventually yellow cards were issued.
Following a tap penalty Melrose scored the first converted try. However we hit back shortly thereafter after with a try by Frankie. A poor line out let Melrose get a try in at the corner putting them ahead by 12 points to 5
Halftime was imminent and thankfully a brilliant solo run by Leo brought the score line up to Melrose 12 to Perthshire’s 10
During the break in the huddle everyone was of the belief that that this was a game for the winning if just upped the intensity and physicality in the second half.
However the best laid schemes sometimes go awry and unfortunately early into the second half Melrose opened the scoring to make it 17 to our 10. We were unable to turn possession into points unlike Melrose who gradually pulled further ahead with a much better team performance. And so the game eventually ended with a win for Melrose by 36 points to 10
Date : 30/09/23 Title Currie 67 - Perthshire 0
With just 16 players we hit the road to play Currie on the outskirts of Edinburgh.
We were all hoping for a much better result today but unfortunately we were not firing on all cylinders against a good Currie side who executed the majority of their moves to a consistently good standard.
Near the end of the game Currie had acquired 50 points. Rather than finish early you elected as a team to continue to play to the final whistle. That showed great team spirit and individual pride under difficult circumstances.
Head coach Les’s thoughts on the game.
“We had very good scrums today but were below standard in the remaining parts of the game. We need to tackle better , work harder in defence and all over the pitch.”
Thankfully in October we will see several injured players returning to the squad to boost numbers at training and improve our performance during games.
